But ideally, mature trees should be professionally inspected and pruned every 3-5 years.

It is recommended to have your Ash trees treated every 3 years to effectively manage Emerald Ash Borer (EAB).

But keep in mind — if your Ash tree has already lost more than 30% of its canopy, EAB Treatments are less likely to be effective. So it may be time (and more cost-effective) to remove the tree. 

This varies by tree species and region, but winter is widely considered the best time to prune.

This is because trees go dormant in the winter, so pruning is less stressful to the tree. Winter pruning can also mitigate the spread of diseases, which is most important for fruit trees.

But larger, more-established trees can be pruned any time of year. The goal is to minimize stress and the percentage of cuts on larger trees is minimal overall, compared to smaller trees.
